Season 14’s change to the Wingman saw the jump from Heavy Ammo to Sniper Ammo, and now halfway through, the developers have provided some insight into how it affected the weapon.

Few weapons can match the longevity of the Wingman in Apex Legends. It’s always been an elite force in the hands of capable players, and being a weapon that consistently succeeds usually means it’s in the best position for a nerf.

However, since the single-shot hand cannon is one of the more difficult weapons to use effectively, the developers wanted the risky, high-reward that comes with picking it up in the first place.

This has led them to change the type of ammunition, in the hopes that teams run the risk of running out of bullets or being forced to give up a lot of usefulness they could otherwise carry freely. Now that this strategy has been in effect for most of a season, here’s what one developer had to say about it.

Apex Legends developer talks about decision to turn Wingman into Sniper Ammo

Senior Game Designer Eric Canavese participated in a Reddit AMA in which he and another developer answered questions from the community. When a fan asked if the team was happy with the end result of a change to the beloved weapon, the developer stated it was a complete success.

“The Wingman is incredibly lethal in the right hands and changes in sniper ammunition have allowed it to maintain its lethality but undermine how easily it can be controlled,” he said. “We’re very happy with the ammunition economy this season and the Wingman feels like it’s in a healthy place.”

He also discussed how the Respawn team believes these changes have increased the risk of using the weapon without affecting the reward, an idea the team has emphasized in other balancing updates before.

Between maintaining the high damage of this game’s iconic Desert Eagle-esque pistol and their philosophy of promoting new movement techniques that pop up from time to time, it’s clear the developers want Apex Legends to be a game that rewards skill. – and they believe this change is a prime example.
