The documentary is yet to be titled, but it will be directed by Peabody Award nominee Sue Kim. It will be the first project of the collaboration between Apple and Extracurricular, a manufacturing company founded by Malala Yousafzai.

The content will focus on ‘haenyeo’, or the mermaids of Jeju Island. The older freedivers catch seafood off the coast and support their community for hundreds of years. However, their numbers are slowly decreasing, but with the help of the younger generation, the revered lifestyle can be revived.

The documentary will feature notable originals from Apple TV+, including “They Call Me Magic,” “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry,” “The Velvet Underground” and “Sidney.” Apple TV+ costs $4.99 per month and can be bundled with other Apple One services.
