ASUS has moved into some rather shaky ground. According to reports from Chinese chiphell tech forums, ASUS is one of the first in its industry to give away a 16-pin power cable for recent orders of ROG Thor power supplies. Until now, we have never heard of a power supply manufacturer offering 450W or 600W adapters for their power supplies. That’s not even necessary, as all GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics cards come with their own support adapters. These adapters would come in very handy if the graphics cards didn’t come with one of their own.
The RTX 3090 Ti remains the only card to still require such a cable, and it is also the only card to require 450W of power. Since there are no PCIe Gen5 power supplies for sale, the 450W power can only be supported via 3×8-pin adapter cables, each supporting 150W of power.
Some retailers also offer ASUS 600W 16-pin power cable for ROG Thor I 1200W and Thor II 1000W supplies. However, this is only for recent purchases.
It will only take a few weeks for the power supplies equipped with native PCIe Gen5 cable connectors to launch. ASUS is developing a power supply called ROG Loki, which means that gamers waiting to upgrade to the RTX 40 series will have plenty of time to get their hands on a new power supply.
