I’ve been looking into getting custom power cables you’ve probably heard of CableMod. They are pretty much the standard when it comes to individually sheathed power cables. In the word keyboards, if you’ve bought a great mechanical keyboard or built one yourself, you’ll want to get a nice, coiled cable. Well, CableMod has used their expertise in making power cables and now offers both ready-made and custom coiled keyboard cables. We went ahead and designed a custom cable and grabbed a ready-made cable to see what these cables are all about.
Special thanks to CableMod for providing their keyboard cables to review.
Order a custom cable
The process of creating your own custom cable is actually quite simple and CableMod has its own configurator, which is very easy to follow. After you select that you want to make a keyboard cable, you will be asked if you want that cable to be a full cable or just the keyboard side and then you will be given a choice of cable type.
You will then be asked some questions about your keyboard, such as whether it has RGB lighting, what connector it uses, and what type of connector your host (PC) has.
Then you select which direction you want the coil to go and which direction you want the coil to end.
Then you can set your lengths. It’s nice that CableMod shows a diagram here.
Finally you can select your colors. You can set the conduit colors, connector colors, and shortcut colors and type. For each there is an options popup and it will show you what your options will look like.
Once you’ve made your selections, they’ll be displayed in the diagram so you can see what your cable will look like.
