Epic Systems brings electronic health record tool to macOS

Apple has partnered with electronic health record provider Epic Systems to bring its tools to macOS.

Initially, Apple had asked Epic to create a native app for its operating system. However, it is said that the EHR vendor is developing a tool that is easier to use than an app. The tool allows doctors to access their clients’ medical records on a Mac.

Epic Systems and the Cupertino-based company have had some disagreements in the past. Apple wanted health patients to have easy access to their medical records, but then Epic argued against the position, saying it would be “overly burdensome” and “compromise patient privacy.”

Apple pioneered access to health records by developing the Apple Health app. Epic Systems is considered the largest EHR provider in the US, with a 2021 report showing 250 million patients on record. The partnership could mean Epic could be added as a medical records provider, but nothing has yet been announced by either party.
