In an official blog post, Vice President and General Manager of Google’s game streaming service Stadia announced the end of the streaming platform. For current users, the service will remain available to players until January 18, 2023. Anyone who has purchased Stadia hardware, games, and add-on content through the Stadia Store will receive a full refund. Google expects these refunds to be completed in January.
This announcement is quite interesting as multiple companies have announced portable game consoles for streaming services like Google Stadia. Last week we saw the announcement of Logitech’s G Cloud handheld.
This announcement makes Stadia another victim of Google shutting down projects just a few years after launch. For those wondering Stadia launched less than 3 years ago. We’ve heard rumors that the service has been shutting down for many months, but Google dismissed many of these rumours. I think it turned out they were true.
Below is the full blog post from the Stadia VP:
For many years, Google has been investing in multiple aspects of the gaming industry. We help developers build and distribute game apps on Google Play and Google Play Games. Game creators reach audiences worldwide on YouTube through videos, live streaming and shorts. And our cloud streaming technology delivers immersive gameplay on a massive scale.
A few years ago, we also launched a consumer gaming service, Stadia. And while Stadia’s approach to streaming games for consumers is built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn’t gained the traction with users we expected, so we’ve made the tough decision to phase out our Stadia streaming service.
We are grateful to the dedicated Stadia players who have been with us from the start. We will refund all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, and all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia Store. Players will continue to have access to their games library and play until January 18, 2023, allowing them to complete the final play sessions. We expect most refunds to be completed by mid-January 2023. We have more details for players about this process in our Help Center.
The underlying technology platform that powers Stadia is widely proven and transcends gaming. We see clear opportunities to apply this technology to other parts of Google, such as YouTube, Google Play and our Augmented Reality (AR) efforts, as well as to make it available to our industry partners, which aligns with what we’re looking for in the future. see gaming. We remain strongly committed to gaming and we will continue to invest in new tools, technologies and platforms that drive the success of developers, industry partners, cloud customers and creators.
For the Stadia team, building and supporting Stadia from the ground up was fueled by the same passion for games that our players have. Many of the Stadia team members will continue this work in other parts of the company. We are so grateful for the pioneering work done by the team and we look forward to continuing to make an impact in gaming and other industries using the foundational Stadia streaming technology.
