Zip rails were added to Apex Legends in Season 15 with the launch of Broken Moon. If you thought zip lines were getting boring and old, this new system throws some twists into the mix—literally. Here’s how they work.
Zip lines have been a staple of Apex Legends since its release. Players have used them to traverse the various maps on which the Apex Games take place, or find new heights or make quick horizontal, straight rotations.
Season 15 will see them get a facelift with all-new zip rails—with bigger and better technology—launching as part of the new map Broken Moon in Apex Legends.
Not only are they faster, but they also turn corners and can help teams spin the new map quickly. Here’s how zip rails work and how best to use them in Apex Legends.
What are zip rails in Apex Legends?
Zip rails are like the zip lines you know and love in Apex Legends, but with more speed. Respawn equated them with a “roller coaster” that flew around the edges of the map, making them easy to rotate.
“Think of them as a transit network with predetermined routes and stops,” said lead designer Jeff Shaw. “They work the same way as zip lines, but you get more speed and momentum, so it’s a lot of fun to play with that way. They can also take turns and corners.
“They’re a roller coaster, high risk, high reward rotational tool.”
These zip rails can be seen all over Broken Moon.
It is important to note that traveling on the zip rails does not make you immortal in Apex Legends. It’s like a regular zip-line in that regard—your accuracy will be affected, and you can also be a sitting duck for enemies to shoot at.
However, they can be used in ways other than rotating. Since you can only jump on lines at predetermined points, you can camp stops to ambush teams. Zip rails are also very effective for quickly getting out of a tricky situation or chasing a weak enemy.
“Zip rails really added this vector of depth and strategy to the experience,” continued Shaw. “You can normally use them to get from one point to another, but you can also use them in all sorts of other ways.
“You can use them to escape danger or help you give a quick decisive push if you have a shield break or an advantage. You can defend them strongly and in the end ambush people. They are super fun and make for many of these memorable moments.”
Maps with zip rails in Apex Legends
Currently zip rails are exclusive to Broken Moon from the launch of Apex Legends season 15. However, Respawn has not ruled out bringing them to more maps as they try to diversify the battle royale experience and create different environments.
