Godrick the Grafted is the first demigod boss in Elden Ring and your first obstacle to becoming Elden Lord. Here’s how to beat Godrick.
The goal of the Tarnished in Elden Ring is to hunt down the demigod children of the goddess Marika, destroy them and steal their Elden Ring shards. Godrick the Grafted is the first of these, but he won’t go down without a fight or willingly hand over his shard.
Godrick is the lord of Stormveil Castle and must be defeated to continue the story. Once he is, the world of the game opens up in a number of ways and the adventure of Elden Ring really begins. Here’s Godrick the Grafted in Elden Ring and how to beat him.
How do you find Godrick the grafted?
Godrick is relatively easy to find if you follow the game’s main story campaign. Just go through Stormveil Castle until you reach the fog gate guarded by a giant troll and two Exile Knights.
There is a Site of Grace in a secluded cell on the right, outside Godrick’s arena. So make sure you heal and recover before going to face him.
Support for NPC calls
It is possible to summon the friendly NPC Nepheli to fight Godrick by your side. Her summoning sign can be found just outside the fog gate and she can be a useful ally.
Her damage output isn’t great, but she’ll get half of Godrick’s attention, allowing you to score some shots against him. You can also take your Spirit Summons into battle for more allies.
To summon Nepheli, you must first find her and exhaust her dialogue. She can be found in a room next to the road outside Godrick’s arena, where the path curves towards him.
Summoning Nepheli is completely optional, but we recommend that you talk to her even if you don’t summon her to continue her quest.
How to defeat Godrick the Grafted?
Thankfully, Godrick isn’t as tough as Margit the Fell because he doesn’t have that character’s speed. However, he is still incredibly aggressive and powerful and can kill even the most experienced player in just a few hits.
If you haven’t already upgraded your weapon to at least +3 on the Roundtable Hold, we recommend that you do so now. Although most players will have done this before meeting Margit.
In the first phase of the fight, Godrick will swing his ax wildly, leaving small gaps for him to hit before you have to dodge. After his combo, he will swing his ax vertically into the ground and this will take him a few seconds to recover. So hit him with everything you’ve got and get out of here.
His ax swings are deadly and cover a lot of ground, so melee fighters will have to stay sharp. Distance fighters just need to keep their distance and attack him from a distance. Don’t let him get close, because getting caught up in his combo will likely mean death.
Blocking can be an effective strategy for tanky melee, builds, but his combos are fast, powerful and come in waves. So it’s often better to dodge and let his animations play. Be careful though, he can launch into another in a split second.
In the second phase of the boss fight, Godrick grabs a dead dragon and inherits the ability to breathe fire. These attacks deal major AOE fire damage, so if you have gear that provides fire buffs, now is the time to equip them. Or ideally before the fight starts.
It is imperative to avoid this dragon fire as it can kill weaker players and has a ridiculous range. So stay mobile and take potshots whenever you can. If you deal enough damage to Godrick, he staggers and you can launch a Critical Attack.
Godrick now relies more on fire damage than just physical attacks, so make sure you’ve bought the cookbooks from the various merchants to learn how to craft items that radiate protective buffs. You can also loot the Flamedrake Talisman from the mini boss in Groveside Cave in Limgrave.
This will help you be a little safer from Godrick’s fire damage. It is also useful against the Dragon Aheel when it comes to fighting him.
Spirit Call to use
Godrick will probably kill your Spirit Summon if left alone with it, but once Godrick is poisoned, his job is done. After this, its main use is as a distraction. If you’re a magic or ranged build, bring in the most tank-like Spirit Ash you have.
Your Spirit Summons and Nepheli can be vital allies in this battle. If you’re a melee build, consider bringing the Jellyfish Spirit Ash. This way you and Nepheli can refuel Godrick while your jelly ally poisons him from afar.
If you’ve completed the Frindgefolk Hero’s Grave dungeon from the start of the game and defeated the boss there, you’ll unlock Banished Knight Oleg. This is a powerful unique NPC summon that along with Nepheli can tank many Godrick’s while attacking from a distance.
Nepheli will most likely also fall if the fight goes on for too long, but its main value is to take Godrick’s attention away from you.
As soon as Godrick falls, you will receive your first Great Rune, a powerful item that can be used to buff yourself once you unlock his power.
