iOS 17 may have fewer new features due to Apple’s AR/VR headset foray

Upcoming iPhone software iOS 17 may be less important than expected as Apple focuses its efforts on its AR/VR headset.

Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg analyst, said iOS 17, which has been nicknamed “Dawn” internally, will have “fewer changes than originally planned.” He says macOS 14, codenamed “Starburst,” will get the same treatment. Gurman says the upcoming launch of the company’s AR/VR headset and its operating system, called xrOS, is currently Apple’s focus.

Apple has been working on introducing a mixed reality headset for a few years now. The latest news is that a launch is expected in 2023, which explains why there are fewer changes to the other software.

Launched in June 2022 and 2020 respectively, iOS 16 and iOS 14 had major features including additions to stock apps Safari and Maps, a new lock screen, the app library, and revamped widget options. iOS 17 is expected to be announced at this year’s WWDC.
