League of Legends patch 12.23 notes: more jungle changes, big tank buffs

LoL patch 12.23 is on its way as Riot balances out Season 13 changes. The ranks first taxis are the jungle and tank champs, both of which are undergoing significant revisions to stabilize the meta ahead of the ranked launch in January: here are the patch notes.

Season 13 of League of Legends has arrived with a bang. With the pre-season update going live on LoL patch 12.22, players are slowly getting used to all the new changes.

In the first few weeks, however, there were a few outliers. Top lane duelists are incredibly strong with new items and role modifications, letting tanks down. Likewise, the jungle is a bit broken with exploits and balancing issues.

Those are the two changes at the top of Riot’s list for LoL patch 12.23, as they aim to stabilize the meta over the holiday season and ahead of the ranked season’s launch in January. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming December update.

When is LoL patch 12.23?

League of Legends Patch 12.23 is ready to go live December 7, 2022right on schedule.

Please note that this will be the last major League of Legends update of 2022. Following the launch of LoL patch 12.23, Riot will be taking a vacation over the Christmas break and returning to kick off season 13 in the new year.

There will be a few hours of downtime when patching begins, and matchmaking queues will be taken offline about three hours in advance.

What changes in LoL patch 12.23?

With the myriad of changes in the jungle, there were bound to be problems early in Season 13. LoL patch 12.23 is a first attempt to fix them all ⁠— exploits, general balance and all.

Riot is aware of the mid lane funnel strategy that revolves around multiple champions purchasing the new jungle pets and has a fix for the December update. More generally, however, the jungle gold will be reduced, while the experience will be slightly increased.

Specific camps have reduced auto-attack ranges, while all camps have new line ranges to be more forgiving of champions who need to kite and move.

As for individual junglers dealing with changes, Dr. Mundo a slew of jungle-centric buffs. Dominant powers Lillia, Shyvana and Trundle will be nerfed.

Tanks get love despite Heartsteel’s dominance

Tanks suffered a bit at the start of Season 13 of League of Legends, especially in the top lane. With gold and experience rearranged across the map and new items favoring fighters and duelists, some tanks are struggling to gain a foothold.

While Heartsteel is still a problem, Riot kind of ignores it to try and attack individual tank champions with buffs. Amumu, Cho’Gath, Malphite, Maokai, Zion, Tahm Kench, and Zac are the main targets to start with, but developers are keeping an eye on things.

“If we see any negative meta effects due to Heartsteel or Tank meta, then we’ll respond, but we’ll let it play out a bit for now to stabilize,” said Leung-Harrison. “Tanks are getting improvements [this patch] are down 2-3% [in winrate].”
