LoL Udyr rework gets emergency buffs to improve bottomless win rates

Udyr’s release has been long awaited by the community and the reception for his rework has been generally positive. However, his win rate and overall power level are low enough to receive a serious set of buffs.

Prior to its rework, Udyr’s gear was one of the most outdated League of Legends. Riot was challenged to maintain its core identity while adding much-needed complexity to its unique four-position gear.

The concepts added to Udyr’s kit have been generally well received by the community so far, but his actual win rate hasn’t caught up. His win rate before this hotfix goes live in Platinum+ is less than 43% according to u.gg, which is funnily much lower than before the rework.

So Udyr gets a series of improvements.

It’s worth nothing that most new champions these days start with a low win rate as people learn them. Unless Riot releases an incredibly broken champion, a low win rate is to be expected.

For example, Zeri’s win rate on release has hovered around 40%, and she has come to dominate the high-level game. And while it looks like Udyr’s win rate will likely increase as more people learn the best ways to use his new kit, it’s been decided he needs a little extra help.

A quick set of improvements for Udyr

Udyr gets serious improvements

Keep in mind that all of Udyr’s skills can contain up to 6 levels, so the peak number for each skill changed reflects what 6 levels in a skill is maxed out at instead of 5.

The hotfix improvements are as follows:

  • Q Physical Damage: 3-9% Max Health > 3-10% Max Health
  • Q Physical damage AD ratio: 4% per 100 bonus AD > 6% per 100 bonus AD
  • Q Physical damage on hit: 5-25 (+10% bonus AD) > 5-45 (+20% bonus AD)
  • E Bonus Movement Speed: 30-50% > 30-65%
  • E Stun Lockout: 6-4.5 seconds > 6-4 seconds

Udyr’s Q was rarely brought past one point in the skill, and due to the fact that most of Udyr’s kit scales with AP, there wasn’t much of a reason for players to invest points in Q.

In addition, Udyr’s E has received some significant improvements to movement speed and ability to stun multiple targets.

And a quick set of nerfs to balance things out

However, the changes in Udyr are not all buffs. Udyr’s W support is a very strong late game and his numbers have been reduced to prevent him from accelerating and becoming the best jungler in the game.

The W nerfs are as follows:

  • W shield strength (max health scale): 2-5% > 2-4%
  • W Heal On-Hit (max health scale): 1.2-1.8% > 1.2-1.5%

While Udyr’s W base numbers have not been reached, his maximum health scale in percentage has been lowered across the board.

The Q and E buffs are significant and somewhat offset by the light W nerfs. Udyr is still very new so only time will tell if these buffs can bring Udyr closer to that ideal 50% win rate.
