M1 Ultra GPU is still not as powerful as the NVIDIA RTX 3090

Apple will have to rethink its M1 silicon marketing as the Apple M1 GPU is not as powerful as RTX 3090.

Apple had previously claimed that the M1 Ultra with a 64-core GPU is just as powerful as a high-end desktop GPU, while using 200W less power. However, this claim has proven to be false.

The Apple Mac Studio with M1 Ultra chip is a small form factor computer made for content creators. The M1 Ultra basically shows two M1 Max chips attached together and delivers 21 TFLOPs of graphics processing power. This new GPU from Apple has access to a very large cache of 128GB of unified memory. It was reportedly 5.3 times more than NVIDIA’s most powerful consumer GPU RTX 3090.

The company previously claimed that their M1 Ultra chip offers identical performance in “industry standard” benchmarks, at the cost of less power.

After Apple lifted the embargo on Mac Studio reviews, the reality was revealed. The tests conducted by The Verge have shown that Apple’s M1 Ultra is no match for the NVIDIA RTX 3090. M1 Ultra could not show better performance in gaming and computing tests with OpenCL API.

The Mac Studio system analyzed by The Verge is Apple’s most powerful variant and retails for around USD 6,199. It has a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU and 128 GB of memory. On the other hand, the price of the RTX 3090 has fallen. This shows that for better performance you have to wait for the RTX 3090 Ti.
