MSI’s Next-Gen Intel Z790 Motherboard Launches September 27

MSI has teased the launch of their next-generation Intel Z790 motherboards for 13th-generation Raptor Lake CPUs for September 27.

The MEG Z790 ACE, MPG Z790 Carbon WiFi, MPG Z790 EDGE WiFi Force and the MAG Z790 Tomahawk are just a few examples of the MSI MAG, MPG and MEG series motherboards that are compatible. MSI announced their next-generation MPG Z790 Carbon WiFi a few weeks ago, as we mentioned here, and the MSI Z790 motherboards will bring all the new capabilities compared to the Z690 series.

Intel’s 13th generation “Raptor Lake” is the last Intel CPU generation to use the LGA 1700 platform. According to Chipzilla, LGA 1700 cards using the 600 series chipset should be compatible with Raptor Lake processors. Raptor Lake CPUs also support DDR5-5600 speeds, which is a significant increase over Alder Lake’s native DDR5-5200 speeds.

CPUs are expected to feature 16 PCIe Gen 5 lanes and 4 PCIe Gen 4 lanes, with the Z790 chipset offering 20 PCIe Gen 4 lanes and 8 PCIe Gen 3 lanes. The motherboard maker plans to release a small number of devices that will have both an x4 PCIe Gen 5 M.2 port and x16 PCIe lanes for discrete graphics cards. Intel’s 14th generation Meteor Lake CPUs will feature native PCIe Gen 5 M.2.

This is useful for those interested in upgrading from a standard Core i3 or Core i5 processor to a more powerful one. They can quickly upgrade their PC’s performance by swapping the 12th Gen CPU for a more expensive Core i7 or Core i9 SKU.
