NVIDIA Announces GeForce RTX 40 Laptop GPU Series and RTX 4090 with 9728 CUDAs

NVIDIA today officially announced the RTX 40 series graphics cards for laptops. The company announced that it would be launching a new flagship RTX 40 mobile series for enthusiasts. The Ada Lovelace-based NVIDIA RTX 40 Series will feature 5th generation Max-Q technology, such as ultra-low voltage GDDR6 memory and three-speed memory controllers. In addition, the architecture will enable advanced AI technologies such as DLSS 3 upscaling.

The company segments the release of its mobile GPUs into RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 enthusiast GPUs and mid-range RTX 4070, 4060, and 4050 graphics. The AD103 GPU of the NVIDIA RTX 4090 Laptop GPU has 9728 CUDA cores. Desktop RTX 4080 cards already use such an arrangement. As a successor to the Ampere-based RTX 3080 Ti GPU, the 4090 is also limited to a maximum thermal design power (TGP) of 150W, excluding Dynamic Boost.

NVIDIA confirmed that this graphics card would provide 38.9 TFLOPS of single-precision compute capability, which is roughly identical to the desktop RTX 4070 Ti. While it should be twice as fast as the desktop RTX 4090, it falls far short. AD104, with 7424 CUDA cores and 12 GB of GDDR6 memory, will be included in the RTX 4080 GPU. As with the RTX 4090, this model will be limited to 150W TGP, while a lower edition can use 60W TGP (so be sure to check the laptop’s specs before buying).

The NVIDIA RTX 4070 laptop GPU gets an AD106 GPU with 4608 CUDA cores and a maximum clock speed of 2.17 GHz. The operating power range of this card is 35 to 115 watts, and the same range applies to laptops with graphics cards in the RTX 4060 and RTX 4050 classes. The 4070 includes 8GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128-bit memory bus, while the RTX 4060 has an identical memory configuration.

The AD107 GPU will be used in NVIDIA’s lowest RTX 40 laptop GPUs. The RTX 4060 has 3072 CUDA cores, while the RTX 4050 has 2560 cores. This computer has 6 GB of GDDR6 RAM and a 96-bit memory bus. NVIDIA today stated that RTX 40 GPUs for laptops would cost a minimum of $999. The 4070/4060/4050-class GPUs will be available on February 22, while the RTX 4080/4090 series will debut two weeks earlier (February 8). Most enthusiast laptops start at a price above $1999.
