Overwatch 2 recently had a huge reveal event that gave fans a ton of new information about Blizzard Entertainment’s new hero shooter.

The reveal event gave fans a lot of new information, such as the debut of the new tank hero Junker Queen.

The interview in question comes via the GameSpot publication, which sat with Keller for just over 25 minutes.

Keller has covered many different topics of conversation, including how the development team believes Overwatch 2 is more than just an update to the original Overwatch.

However, in the first part of the interview, Keller takes a closer look at the revelation that Overwatch 2 is doing away with the series’ long-standing loot box system.

When asked about the decision to get rid of loot boxes, Keller said: “Boot boxes…they’ve always been part of Overwatch 1, but as the game has grown, especially now that we’re moving to a free-to-play version of the game… it gets a lot harder to earn what you want with a loot box system.”

“By Losing” [that system] and by moving into a Shop for Overwatch 2, it gives players real freedom of choice and the choice to decide what they want in the game.”

Keller then went on to talk about Overwatch 2’s battle pass system, which he claims is the next thing that will entice players into wanting to keep coming back to the game.

Though it’s worth noting that Keller has confirmed that Overwatch 2’s battle pass will “hit many of the same spots” as Overwatch 1’s progression system.

For many, removing loot boxes in favor of Item Shop’s less arbitrary monetization model will be a welcome change in Overwatch 2, but for now fans will just have to wait and see how Blizzard implements it.
