After years of being in the background, it looks like Mauga will finally become a playable hero in Overwatch 2. However, we may have to wait a while before we can try him out.
Mauga was first introduced in Baptiste’s short story, “What You Left Behind,” which came out all the way back in 2019. Although he was confirmed by Jeff Kaplan as an upcoming hero, there has been no sign of him since the story was released.
However, according to a new interview with the developers of Overwatch 2, it looks like he’ll finally arrive as a tank hero after the sequel releases on October 4.
Mauga Reportedly Coming to Overwatch 2
On June 17, a post was posted on the main Overwatch subreddit summarizing an interview French content creator Potxeca had with developers Aaron Keller, Geoff Goodman and others.
Unfortunately, Potxeca has made the developer interview private, but according to the post, “it was basically confirmed that the new tank hero in season 2 is Mauga.”
We already knew from the Overwatch 2 infostream on June 16 that a new tank hero would be arriving for Season 2. Since Mauga is already an established character, it makes sense that he would be the first new tank after Junker Queen.
Potxeca’s video was a wealth of information – detailing cross-progression as well as a third Overwatch 2 beta – but at this point it’s impossible to confirm whether it’s entirely true or not.
Until we officially hear from Blizzard, we can’t say for sure if Mauga will be the next tank hero to arrive after Junker Queen. However, after three years of waiting, it would be a perfect time to finally introduce the big man to the game.
