Phil Spencer Confirms Microsoft “Hasn’t Give Up” That FFXVI Is Coming to Xbox

After Microsoft’s Tokyo Game Show conference, Phil Spencer confirmed that the company is still trying to get FFVIX on Xbox.

After more than a decade, Final Fantasy XIV Online has continued and has become one of the most popular MMOs available today.

However, despite availability and crossplay on platforms such as PlayStation and PC, there is still one big gap in FFXIV’s coverage: Xbox consoles.

Now, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has confirmed that the company still plans to bring the MMO to Xbox consoles in the future.

Phil Spencer Talks About FFXVI Coming to Xbox

After Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2022, Spencer spoke with Japanese game publication Game Watch about the company’s relationship with Japan.

During the interview, Game Watch’s Seiji Nakamura asked Spencer about the last time they spoke at Xbox’s “X019” event in 2019, where Spencer discussed bringing FFXIV to Xbox.

In 2019, Spencer visited Japan and confirmed that he had spoken with Naoki Yoshida, the director of FFXIV, and said the company was “looking for a way to develop it on Xbox with Mr. Yoshida.”

Spencer acknowledged those comments, confirming: “Of course we haven’t given up yet. This is the commitment of Microsoft and Square Enix to the gaming fans of both companies, and we will continue to coordinate in the future.”

Unfortunately, Spencer didn’t provide updated progress reports on when Xbox fans could expect the MMO to make its way to the Xbox Series X and S.

Apparently FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida talked to Spencer about fixing the issues that prevented the game from coming to Xbox.

However, Yoshida herself shed a little light on what exactly was holding back progress on FFXIV coming to Xbox consoles.

In a 2019 interview with the publication Wccftech, Yoshida said, “To play an MMORPG, there are 2 regulations for Microsoft that allow crossplay.”

Yoshida goes on to explain that one of those rules was that players on different platforms “cannot chat with each other in-game”, while the other was “you cannot create a community with [players] on another platform.”

Obviously, this was a major hurdle for the development team in trying to bring the game to Xbox platforms.

While there’s no official word yet on when FFXIV will be coming to Xbox, it’s clear Phil Spencer still has his eye on the massive MMO.
