Phoenix & Cypher Queuing For Valorant Buffs, But Riot Don’t Rush Them

Valorant’s meta changes all the time, but it’s been a while since Phoenix of Cypher was featured. The two agents lurked at release—the latter especially so—but have been forgotten. Now they are lining up for buffs, but don’t expect them anytime soon.

Both Phoenix and Cypher once had a place in the Valorant meta. The first was a flashy duelist, with his ability to gather information and a few fragments without worrying about dying, thanks to Run It Back which is very powerful.

Cypher was even more so. You couldn’t play Valorant for the first six months without encountering one of his journeys or being tagged by his camera.

However, both have since faded into the background. New duelists have replaced Phoenix, while Killjoy and Sova have matched Cypher’s intel tricks. Even for flankwatch, he is no match for Chamber.

However, Riot has acknowledged this and finds a way to get the duo of original agents back into the Valorant meta.

Phoenix is one of two Valorant Agents destined for buffs.

“We’re working on Phoenix, but it’s too early for us to talk about the details of what it might entail,” developer John Goscicki said on Reddit. “Right now, we want to take the time to research everything from song changes to something more.”

Designer Jay Watford said the same about Cypher:[He] is in a similar situation. We’re not willing to share details or dates, but he’s definitely on our radar.”

If the ambiguity of the statements wasn’t a clear enough indicator, Riot has urged players to hold on as these changes aren’t about to be released. They work slowly to “find the right place for the long term” for both, not rushing for changes that could backfire.

It’s not the first time Riot has really taken the time to think about character changes. The Yoru rework, which was eventually released earlier in Episode 4, came after months of delay. Viper went through the same painstaking process closer to the game’s launch.

While there may be little news now, Phoenix and Cypher mains can get excited about positive changes coming their way. We’ll keep you updated with details as they become available.
