A Pokemon fan shared his own custom ruleset, which offered unique game rules while being much less difficult than the popular Nuzlocke challenge.

With its formula, turn-based combat, and structure, Pokemon games may not always provide a reason for a second playthrough.

As a result, members of the Pokemon community have developed challenges to increase the difficulty, such as the Nuzlocke Challenge which forces you to catch the first Pokemon they encounter in an area, and throwing passed out Pokemon.

But for those who think the Nuzlocke challenge is a bit too tough, a Reddit user introduced an alternate ruleset, which offers a less intense, but still challenging, playthrough.

Redditor offers alternative to Pokemon Nuzlocke challenge

Redditor TheAssumingMage created their playthrough rules, called PokeCoach, as an alternative to the Nuzlocke. This playthrough is much smoother than the Nuzlocke Challenge, and also promotes variation in team building.

Unlike Nuzlocke, which punishes players and drastically limits Pokemon choice, this playthrough prioritizes exploring more Pokemon team options — a gameplay element that most players often ignore during their basic playthroughs.

Other Pokemon fans praise the creator of the rules.

“I really like this. It also allows you to try out soooo many different Pokemon,” noted one redditor, praising the diversity promoted in the PokeCoach playthrough.

Another user complimented the idea: “This sounds fun. I’ve been doing a lot of reps lately and while a few old favorites always make the team, I’ve also tried as much as possible to use lines that I haven’t trained before.”

This new play-through rule is a great way to play older games for trainers waiting for Scarlet and Violet to release.
