Return to Monkey Island: Release Date, Trailers, Platforms and Everything We Know

Return to Monkey Island, the sixth installment in the Monkey Island franchise, isn’t far off, so here’s what we know about the new quirky adventure game.

While April Fool’s announcements are a dozen, Monkey Island series creator Ron Gilbert has followed an 8-year-old prank to announce the latest Monkey Island game.

The point-and-click adventure is a collaboration between Terrible Toybox, Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games, and fans have started to get hyped about the series rearing its pirate-like self-referential head again.

Fanning the flames of excitement is that Return to Monkey Island sees creator Ron Gilbert back in the saddle as director as he co-writes the game with Dave Grossman for the first time since Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge was released in 1991.

From a release window to early story details, here’s everything we know.

Return to Monkey Island release date

Thanks to an update at Gamescom 2022, we now know that Return to Monkey Island is all set to go September 19, 2022.

Return to Monkey Island Trailers

With only two months apart, we got two trailers for Return to Monkey Island, the first of which was a juicy teaser to whet the appetite.

Then, during a Mini Nintendo Direct on June 28, 2022, another trailer was dropped that gave a deeper look into the game, the story and where all the characters are so far.

The game’s official release date was announced with a special trailer that was shown during Gamescom 2022.

Return to Monkey Island platforms

It has been officially confirmed that, for now anyway, Return to Monkey Island will only set foot on the Nintendo Switch and pc for now.

Even though Monkey Island games have already appeared on PlayStation and Xbox, this will apparently not be the case for Return to Monkey Island. There is always a chance that the game will be ported in the future.

Return to the story of Monkey Island Details

Ron Gilbert has announced that this game will continue straight from 1991’s Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge.

So we can expect Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine and more to pick up where they left off at their peak.

Expect ‘gas leak’ levels from roasting the games in the series made without Gilbert’s intervention. As well as incorporating certain top picks from the games made since Gilbert and Grossman’s departure from the series.
