Satellite connectivity to arrive on future Android phones

Chipmaker Qualcomm reveals that next-generation Android phones will have satellite connectivity to compete with Apple’s Emergency SOS feature.

Future Android phones

Snapdragon Satellite is similar to the Emergency SOS via satellite in that it is a two-way messaging solution based on satellite technology. Support for satellite link messaging will be integrated into the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform smartphones using this technology will become available to the public later this year.

Qualcomm said the Snapdragon Satellite feature will be made possible with a Globalstar partnership. Connectivity and text messaging will become available in rural, remote and offshore locations. The presentation suggests that Snapdragon Satellite may not be just for emergency communications purposes when it launches.

Satellite connectivity is expected to launch first on smartphones and then potentially expand to tablets, laptops, IoT devices and vehicles. App developers and OEMs may soon come up with branded services. Smartphone makers and Qualcomm plan to charge users for access.
