Inspired by Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Skull and Bones is an online game that will cast players in the role of swashbucklers during the Golden Age of Piracy.
Publisher Ubisoft unveiled the pirate-themed adventure at its E3 2017 press conference, promising an experience that would take the mechanics of Black Flag’s naval gameplay to the next level.
Ubisoft Singapore is leading the development of the beleaguered project, which the publisher has delayed several times. The lengthy production cycle is reportedly due in part to Skull & Bones undergoing several reboots.
While the game has been in development for a long time after multiple delays, here’s everything we know about Skull and Bones.
Skull and Bones release date
Skull and Bones launches on March 9, 2023, after several delays. The most recent delay is simply to further refine the game, with the developers revealing that Skull and Bones development is essentially “finished”.
An open beta will be held ahead of the game’s launch, but a date has not yet been announced.
Skull and Bones Platforms
The pirate-filled online adventure is ready to sail across PC via the Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Google Stadia and Amazon Luna.
Skull and Bones trailer
Two trailers have been released for Skull and Bones. The first is a gameplay overview trailer that explores what you will do and how you will become a notorious pirate.
Subsequently, Ubisoft released a trailer for PC features that gives a deeper look at the style and theme of the game itself, while showing off the unlimited FPS and many more benefits of playing on a PC.
Details of Skull and Bones gameplay
The gameplay overview trailer for Skull and Bones states that it takes place in an Indian Ocean inspired environment. Players take on the role of an ordinary swashbuckler in search of the most notorious pirate on the high seas. They start with a visit to Sainte-Anne, a pirate den that doubles as an in-game hub.
While exploring Sainte-Anne, users can expect to socialize with other players, and stock up on ship upgrades, provisions, and equipment.
The Infamy system serves as the means by which any Skull and Bones user will boost their pirate’s reputation. So as their infamy grows, so will new opportunities.
Infamy-enhancing activities notably include exploration, treasure hunt, heists, and dynamic events. Completing contracts for NPCs is another way to increase a pirate’s reputation, with some jobs even allowing players to team up with fellow swashbucklers online.
Sail the open seas and become a formidable pirate in Skull & Bones
Of course pirates will start their adventure with a small ship – a dow actually. However, progression should reward more powerful ships, each with a unique play style. The condition of the ship and its crew will also require regular inspection by the pirate captain, especially since disgruntled crew members will have no problem starting a mutiny if things go wrong.
In terms of off-ship adventure, Skull and Bones only allows limited exploration on land. Players can even manage resource looting through an in-game menu on the ship.
The seagoing ships therefore play an integral role in Skull and Bones, with three different types confirmed for launch. Cargo ships are among the slowest ships, but should be useful to those carrying large amounts of loot.
Navigation ships move through the water at more speed, but less cargo space and “lower hull HP” can be a deal breaker for some.
Finally, Firepower ships are equipped with more gun ports, resulting in higher damage outputs. The downside is that these ships are not easy to maneuver.
