According to Bethesda producer Todd Howard, MachineGames’ Indiana Jones game will come as a “genre mash-up.”

Bethesda Softworks announced the project in January 2021, revealing Wolfenstein studio MachineGames as the lead developer.

In addition, Todd Howard of Bethesda Game Studios serves as an executive producer on the Indy-starring title, but further production details remain under wraps.

Since the release is likely to be several years away, it’s unlikely that concrete details will emerge anytime soon. However, in a recent interview, Howard provided remarkable clarification.

The Indiana Jones game isn’t just going to be an action adventure

Todd Howard recently sat down for an interview on episode 342 of the Lex Fridman Podcast, where he spoke briefly about the unnamed Indiana Jones project.

Howard called the MachineGames crew the “perfect fit” for the endeavor, teasing that it comes as a “clear love letter” to the franchise.

When asked if players should expect an “action-adventure game,” the producer said the project is really more of a “mash-up.”

Howard continued: “…it’s not one thing on purpose. It does many different things [he and MachineGames] wanted to do in a game. It’s something unique.”

The Elder Scrolls producer, who considers Raiders of the Ark his favorite movie, said he originally pitched his idea for an Indiana Jones game back in 2009. Bethesda and Lucasfilm couldn’t come to an agreement, so both sides put the proposal aside.

Lucasfilm Games’ relatively newfound willingness to license its properties allowed Howard and Co. a way back. However, it is not yet known when the fruits of such efforts will become visible.
