Have you ever felt that no matter how big your storage space is, it’s never enough? Gone are the days when people talked about gigabytes. With our storage needs dramatically increasing, we’re now on Terabytes.
Speaking of Terabytes, we’ve got the perfect HDD in mind for all your storage needs, so you’ll never have to decide which files to keep or delete. Here comes Western Digital with its 22 TB HDD as our savior. It looks like it will lead the way in the market as it comes as a single-disk solution for retail. Starting with the Ultrastar DC HC570 HDD for servers, capacity limits have now expanded to other product lines, including the Purple Pro (surveillance), Gold (enterprise), and Red Pro (NAS boxes).
In the words of Ravi Pendekanti, the company’s senior vice president of product management and marketing, HDD Business Unit, “We are delighted to reach this milestone as HDDs are complex and advanced systems. From the cloud to the edge, Western Digital hard drives play a vital role in storing, protecting, capturing and analyzing the data that shapes nearly every aspect of our digital lives. Our technology leadership and extensive portfolio of industry-leading HDDs offer us a great opportunity to deliver value to our customers today and well into the future.”
There are four helium-filled powertrains and all are designed with a similar composition using OptiNAND technology along with energy-assisted PRM (ePRM). There is a three-stage actuator that stacks 2.2 TB platters. They all have the same 3.5-inch form factor and a SATA interface with speeds of 6 Gbps. There is a hefty 512MB cache and a 7200 spindle speed.
The 22TB Red Pro and Purple Pro are both retail models and will deliver a maximum sustained data rate of 265MB/s, while the Gold model offers up to 291MB/s. The durability of all models is unmatchable with anything we’ve seen on the market; the Gold and Purple Pro models have an average time to failure (MTBF) of 2.5 million hours and 1 million hours for Red Pro. All three models are on sale for USD 599.99.
