When is Forspoken out? Release date, console exclusivity, gameplay, more

Forspoken is a new AAA action-adventure, RPG title from Square Enix. Here’s everything you need to know about this upcoming open world game, including the release date and trailers.

Revealed as Project Athia before the PlayStation 5 even launched, Forspoken offers great looking visuals and gameplay, but we know little about the final product.

Developed by Luminous Productions, a branch of Square Enix, the game is about a woman named Frey who is transported from New York to a vast parallel world. Here she develops superpowers and is drawn into a conflict between the inhabitants of the world and powerful beings known as ‘Tantas’.

Forspoken looks like an open-world action game with RPG elements, with a unique, fluid traversal system. Here’s everything we know so far.

Latest abandoned news

Forspoken postponed to 2023

In a statement shared on social media, Square Enix and Luminous Productions announced that they had made the “strategic decision” to postpone Forspoken until January 2023.

“We want to thank you for your continued support and patience throughout this journey,” they wrote, before promising more information would be shared “later this summer.”

State of Play Trailer – March 9, 2022

A new trailer shown at Sony’s State of Play event in March 2022 has somewhat made up for the game’s recent delays by showing off some hot new footage.

Predicted release date and platforms

Forspoken is now slated for release on January 24, 2023for both PlayStation 5 and PC.

Luminous Productions announced the new release date on social mediaexplaining that “all game elements are now complete”, but development was entering its final polishing stages.

This isn’t the first time Forspoken has been delayed; it was originally scheduled for release on May 24, 2022, before being pushed back to October 11, 2022. Now it won’t be released until early 2023.

As for platforms, the game will be released on PC and is a timed console exclusive to PS5. This exclusivity is expected to last at least two years, so Xbox users may have a long wait – if it’s released on console at all.

Tanta Sila sits on a metal throneLuminous Productions

Tanta Sila is positioned as the main villain of the game – or is this a red herring?

First Forspoken trailer and plot

The first Forspoken trailer showcased a mix of gameplay and cinematic storytelling. Frey Holland (Ella Balinska) talks to her cat about how much she hates the city after being spanked by a group of crooks in a flashback. She is then transported through a portal from a roof to another world.

When she gets there, she is informed by a disembodied voice from her new hip bracelet that she is in a different version of the Earth. Frey is also told that she now has new magical abilities that can be used in combat and to traverse the vast world of the game at high speeds.

Frey discovers that she has been called to this fantasy world as “their last hope” to battle a powerful sorceress named Tanta Sila, whom she can fight at the end of the trailer. The word ‘Tanta’ is implied as a sorceress or some other evil magic user that the world’s inhabitants are afraid of.

Who are the Tantas in Forspoken?

Forspoken’s early trailers did their best to position the ‘Tantas’ as the main opponents of the game. Threats Frey will have to defeat, likely in a series of boss fights, leading to Tanta Sila “the strongest and most formidable of all Tantas.” However, what are the Tantas and why does Frey have to fight them?

A post from the PlayStation Blog took a closer look at the Tantas and why they are considered villains. The Tantas are said to be a council of benevolent wizards who ruled the land of Athia, where Forspoken is set. Each Tanta had different responsibilities and worked together with the others to keep society running smoothly, they all seem to be female as well.

However, something suddenly corrupted the Tantas, turning the wise and beloved rulers into vicious tyrants, they also seemingly stopped cooperating with each other and the people of Athia. The second Forspoken trailer introduced Tanta Prav, who seems a lot more unhinged than Sila. This encounter also seems to lead to a boss fight between Fray and Prav.

Fray is considered a threat to the Tantas for an unknown reason, although it could be because she has the resources to defeat them and is seen as a potential savior by the people of Athia. However, we suspect that the Tantas are simply the face of a larger unseen enemy, most likely responsible for their corruption.

Considered the ‘Tanta of Power’, Tanta Sila once commanded Athia’s army before an event known as the ‘Break’, which we suspect led Sila to become a militaristic despot. Prav was the “Tanta of Justice” and served as a judge-like figure before the break. But now Prav has become “a heartless executioner with a twisted sense of justice”.

We’ll give you more information about the other Tantas and Forspoken characters when it arrives. We especially want to know how their character descriptions will inform gameplay and boss encounters.

Pronounced gameplay details

The first trailer showed some very impressive moments. Frey uses her powers to sweep across different terrains, from cities, fields to mountainous areas. She is also shown fighting a range of enemies from goblin-like creatures, human-like knights, dragons and boss fights against Tantas.

Her fighting skills seem to have something to do with her bracelet. This allows her to spawn weapons from pure energy and cast a selection of spells to damage enemies at a distance or at close range. She can even use the bracelet to create a glider that will allow her to quickly travel across the open world.

As a deep RPG, Forspoken features a range of crafting systems, trading options, levels to grind and skills to unlock. The vast open land promotes exploration and is home to a number of side missions, hidden chests, XP bonuses and the like.

Forspoken uses ray tracing to create enhanced lighting effects as the game world loads procedurally generated large-scale locations.

Graphics Options & DualSense Features

At a Game Awards press event in 2021, Creative Producer Raio Mitsuno confirmed that Forspoken will have three graphics modes on PS5 for players to choose from (thanks, Ungeek):

Performance Modee – 1440p resolution at 60FPS
Graphics mode – 4K resolution at 30FPS
Ray Tracing Mode – Equipped with ray tracing

Mitsuno explained the modes: “Right now we plan to add the three main modes for the PS5 that you see in a lot of games these days. So you have the performance mode, which is rendered in 2K at 60 frames per second, and then we have the graphics mode that is 4K and 30 frames per second. And then we also have a mode that uses ray tracing, so we have the set of modes that you’ve seen in the modern PS5 games today.”

Here Frey can be seen summoning a shield to defend himself.

Mitsuno didn’t say how many frames or what the resolution of the Ray Tracing mode would be, but looking at the other two modes, it’s likely to be 30FPS and 2K. Although this has not been confirmed by Square-Enix so far.

Some players may be disappointed that the game doesn’t offer 4K and 60FPS like many PS5 games do, but at least players have the option to choose the mode that best suits their needs.

The developers also discussed how Forspoken will leverage the PS5’s DualSense controllers, saying, “We really added a lot of unique PlayStation 5 hardware features when we developed this game.

“For example, using the adaptive triggers, we added tactile feedback when you use the different types of magic. We have a lot of different magic spells that you can use in the game, and the planners and designers sat down and thought about how to differentiate the feedback you get from the controller for each of the magic spells.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted as more information comes out about Forspoken.
