World of Warcraft is getting another major overhaul with the arrival of the Dragonflight expansion later in 2022, and the new playable race has fans demanding updates to some of the game’s older options.
Dragonflight will be WoW’s ninth expansion since it debuted in 2004, and it brings a new race to the table. The Dracthyr, a type of human-dragon hybrid, leaves The Forbidden Reach and takes on Azeroth and the other associated locations.
While a new race is always a welcome addition to the MMO, there is a cult of fans who think the design of these new creatures highlights a major flaw in the design of the game’s classic character options.
WoW Fans Call For Major Redesigns Of Classic Races Ahead Of Dragonflight
The big complaint circulating on the net is that the Dracthyr models look far too much like a combination of Night Elves, Blood Elves and Humans.
For some people, this resemblance takes away the unique identity of those other races, as their best traits are replicated, but with a more appealing sheen to the new half-dragon characters.
A common point that came up when arguing for an update to the older races was about creative control, especially as Blizzard is implementing more cutscenes that portray the player’s character.
“I would say that the faces of the Bloof Elf/Void Elf look rather dull and weird, especially considering the quality of the new models,” said one player. “They’re not terrible. But they really lack detail and expression.”
Another fan added that all the classic races are a bit clunky and are “too strongly tied to a version of the game that no longer exists”.
Of course, not everyone is on the same page and many think that the other breeds are still superior to the newcomers. “They look good, but I definitely like Night Elves/Blood Elves better than the Korean MMO Elf aesthetic,” added one dissenter.
The possibility of a visual update isn’t completely ruled out, but there are no signs that this will happen in Dragonflight, so players may have to wait a little longer.
